so i recently had malaysian food for the first time. i liked it a lot! it actually reminded me of what chinese food is in the states! haha not that i don’t appreciate real, authentic chinese cooking, but i do sometimes miss the greasy americanized chinese take out.
i also tried out dumplings from barilla after reading about the place from katherine is awesome. (why does it seem like she’s the only nz blogger? anyone know of others like her? also, is there a nz equivalent of yelp? it would really be a helpful thing to have.) when we got there on a sunday night, the place was packed with a line out the door. we chose to get take out instead of waiting for a table and after a way-too-long time deciding what to get from their large menu, we ordered pork with chives, pork with cabbage (fried), pork with shrimp, and the suggested pork and fennel by eatherenow.co.nz. (oh goodness, i’m getting really hungry now…) although the skin was thicker than what i like (i like those gyoza thin dumplings), all the fillings were absolutely delicious. i wasn’t terribly fond of the fennel one, but i think that might be because i didn’t grow up eating fennel. my favorite and i think the best filling for any dumpling is pork with chives-it’s hard to mess up a classic. obviously, there were leftovers as the dumplings were big and came 20 per order. i fried them for lunch the next day, and guess what? still delicious! can’t wait for the next time.
